On Aug. 19, Texas A&M University-Kingsville President Steven Tallant issued a ban on throwing tortillas, citing safety and image concerns. Besides one report of a nosebleed caused by either a fried or frozen flying tortilla, Tallant said wasting them by the dozen sends the wrong message at a time when some people struggle to feed their families. Also, he said he has received complaints from students, alumni, and Kingsville residents that the practice is demeaning to Hispanics.
