June 3, 2011 by editor

It may come as a shock to many regular Disney California Adventure parkgoers on their next visit that the Mission Tortilla factory is no more.

Tuesday, May 31st, marked the end of yet another piece of the opening day landscape at DCA. After reported failed attempts at renewing the sponsorship agreement, it is believed the Mission Tortilla Factory closed its doors to make room for something sweeter — a Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory.

Acrylamide prevention failing to catch fire in US

June 3, 2011 by editor

Despite a large amount of research since acrylamide first hit the headlines in 2002, scientists have not yet given regulators clear direction on whether maximum limits should be set, or what they should be.

Last year’s report on dietary acrylamide from JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives) concluded there was insufficient data to conclusively state whether or not dietary acrylamide at levels found in the normal human diet posed a health risk.

The FDA, meanwhile, was still in the information-gathering stage on acrylamide, and has not yet instituted any regulatory action, said Kesel.  More >>

El Indio Tortilleria… In Search of OC’s Best Tortillas…

May 26, 2011 by editor

It was while I was at Trader Joes, looking at their hideously overpriced pack of barely edible corn tortillas, that I remembered something: we’re blessed with tortillerías in Orange County. We don’t have to rely on Maseca’s masa monopoly for our tortilla needs–from San Juan Capistrano to La Habra, Westminster to even Rancho Santa Margarita, mom-and-pop tortillerias fulfill the daily bread of Mexicans and gabachos alike. But which are great, and which should be avoided like Trader Joes tortillas? Hence, the unveiling of yet another new column: Tortilla Tuesdays, in which we’ll review the county’s mom-and-pop tortillerias, one at a time, with a letter grade. The first: El Indio Tortilleria in SanTana.  More >>

Food makers’ challenge: Reduce salt, but keep taste

May 26, 2011 by editor

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Salt: Americans love it, health experts fear it and foodmakers are caught in the middle. The nation’s largest food producers are facing mounting calls from health advocates, Wal-Mart and even first lady Michelle Obama to reduce sodium in the processed foods that account for the vast majority of our salt intake.  The catch? Many Americans are so wary that “low salt” will really mean “less flavor” that some companies are hesitant to even tell consumers when they make a reduction.  More >>

Rudy’s Tortillas relies on Sage ERP X3’s to handle business operations and processes.

May 25, 2011 by editor

Rudy’s Tortillas is a growing 65-year-old family-owned company based in Dallas, TX that sells its food products to restaurant chains in 35 states. After using different systems to manage accounting, customer service and purchasing, Rudy’s CFO knew it was time for a change. “There was zero integration between the systems, and as a result we were lacking the meaningful data necessary to run a successful business,” recalls Chuck Langenhop, CFO for the company. “We could not easily tell what stock we had on hand or what we needed to produce based on customer demand. There were delays in finalizing monthly financial statements and cost analysis was a time-consuming process.  More >>

A Tortilla Factory in Historic District not the Way to Go

May 25, 2011 by editor

It is simply the wrong tenant in the wrong space in the wrong part of the city at the wrong time. A petition is now being circulated in the neighborhood. A lawyer has been hired to represent the wishes of those against the tortilla factory and frankly, this is the kind of public debate that is not needed in the best part of town when Chelsea is looking better than it has in decades. The Zoning Board of Appeals is the real thing. It has protected neighborhoods against the wrong developments for many years. The request for a tortilla factory for Winnisimmet Street requires the Zoning Board to stand firm in the best interests of the entire Chelsea Waterfront. It will take a bit longer to find another tenant and purchaser for this property, but the wait will be worth it for the neighborhood in the years to come. More >>

States lead debate over modified food labeling

May 25, 2011 by editor

National groups see the California debate as a proxy for a larger fight over genetically engineered food. “It’s a big state, and a lot of trends start here, and so there’s a big imperative to try to move this California bill along,” said James Ferro, aquaculture policy analyst for the Ocean Conservancy, which is a co-sponsor of Huffman’s bill. Opponents include the Biotechnology Industry Organization and agriculture groups such as the California Farm Bureau, which has little to do with fishing but plenty to do with genetically modified crops such as wheat, corn and soy. Man Jailed After Deputies Confuse Tortilla Dough For Drugs

May 10, 2011 by editor

The paper reports Antonio Hernandez Carranza had driven more than 2,000 miles to see his sister in Johnson City, Tenn. But instead of reaching the home of his sister, the 45-year-old carpet cleaner found himself in the Buncombe County jail under a $300,000 bond on charges of driving while intoxicated, failing to heed police lights and sirens and possession of 91 pounds of cocaine.  The paper states he was released four days later after sheriff’s deputies realized Hernandez, wasn’t intoxicated and that what was in the back of his truck was exactly what he had said – $400 worth of cheese, shrimp and tortilla and tamale dough.

America’s Food Sweatshops and the Workers of Color Who Feed Us

February 18, 2011 by editor

Daniel Gross, executive director of Brandworkers International, noted in response to the case that the workers at the tortilla factory were not organized into a union. Neither had the facilities ever been inspected by OSHA prior to Baten’s tragic death. Many more questions remain unanswered: Were Baten and his colleagues adequately trained to use the dangerous food machines safely? Were they given breaks during their graveyard shift? What access to health care did Baten have to ease the fatigue he undoubtedly experienced from working six days a week?  But what we do know is that Baten’s workplace wasn’t unique. Workers suffer from low wages and hazardous working conditions throughout the food chain.
